Mzansi Icons Represent at BET Awards
South African icons Pabi Cooper, Bonnie Mbuli and K.O. made their fans proud as they attended the Black Entertainment Television Awards on Sunday, 25 June.
The Mzansi stars joined musicians, actors and entertainers who came from around the world to attend the glitzy ceremony at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California. Joining them in representing Africa were Uncle Waffles from the Kingdom of Eswatini, Libianca from Cameroon and Burna Boy from Nigeria.
Cooper wowed the gathered crowd with an electric pink, body-hugging gown, while Uncle Waffles went for the more elegant look with a silver crystal gown by local designer, Ryan Keys. K.O. was also looking fierce in a Basotho-inspired hat, colourful patchwork trousers and a black shirt to tie it all together.
Afrobeats icon Burna Boy claimed the Best International Act award for his 2022 hit album “Love, Damini”, beating K.O and Uncle Waffles to the mark. Libianca was also able to walk away with the Viewer’s Choice: Best New International Act award.
Along with the African stars were several Hollywood big names, including Beyoncé and SZA, who tied for Best Album of the Year with their respective “Renaissance” and “SOS” LPs, as well as Kendrick Lamar who was recognised as the Best Male Hip-Hop Artist of the year.
